5th Annual Africa in the Ozarks May 3-6

Posted on March - 10 - 2012
May 3, 2012 to May 6, 2012

The 5th Annual Africa in the Ozarks is a celebration of African Rhythm, Dance, Food, and Culture from May 3rd – May 6th beginning with a special dinner at Caribe on Thursday evening and continuing Friday – Sunday with classes in the Aud and performances and vendor exhibits in Basin Park.
Africa in the Ozarks 2012

Highlights:

* Learn from master-level African performers and teachers, brought to Eureka Springs from around the country!
* Marvel at virtuoso world-class theater performances, including a rare opportunity to witness mask-stiltwalking by one of the few people in this country authorized to perform this esoteric art!
* Enjoy an African feast!
* Shop til you drop at an African-style bazaar, featuring African clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, and art!
* Be a part of this unique blast of boisterousness and beauty!
* This exciting event is brought to you by Eureka Springs resident Kouakou Yao “Angelo.” He has gathered performers from Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and neighboring countries, with whom Angelo danced in the African national ballet company “Koteba.” Each artist – six virtuoso drummers and dancers in all – were stars in their own right, back in Africa. Now they are professional performers and teachers living throughout this country. Angelo has called them to Eureka Springs, to create a unique ensemble theatrical and learning experience unparalleled anywhere.
Angelo of Afrique Aya* Angelo himself was invited to the United States in 1997 by choreographer Ralph Lemon to create “Geography,” a fusion of post-modern movement and traditional African dance that was performed at Yale Repertory Theatre, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and elsewhere throughout the United States. He moved to Burlington, Vermont in 1998, where he formed Afrique Aya; in 2002 he moved to Northwest Arkansas with his wife, Jennifer Clay, a native Arkansan.
* Jennifer Clay, also a member of the Afrique Aya troupe, studied modern and traditional ballet at a young age, and later, Afro-Caribbean dance. As a college student, she spent time in Ghana, studying dance and traveling with the Global Village Project.
